Inauguration of Jamii ya sinema.club in the framework of the Biennale de Lubumbashi #7.

Jamii ya sinema.club is a platform for discussion and collective research devoted to film cultures and the arts of the moving image, which aims to contribute to debates on past, present and future developments in these expanded practices from a tropical position. The platform has grown out of discussions and meetings at Ateliers Picha and has opened to the public at the 2022 Lubumbashi Biennale in the form of a film society, a translocal, hybrid ciné-club. Mixing Swahili, French, English and street slang, its name is intended to evoke the sort of informal, almost familiar spaces (jamii means society, but also extended family) for contact and connection that the film society intends to establish. Jamii ya sinema.club has begun to organise public programmes (workshops, screenings, lectures and discussions) in Lubumbashi. These will become a local fixture in the months ahead, and will also expand internationally in the form of presentations, exhibitions and an online broadcasting platform. Following those Pan-African paths that have shown how film clubs can contribute, post-independence, to the emergence of rich film cultures on the continent, this project offers the opportunity to reflect on their past and future functions (places of "technocratic paternalism" marked by coloniality, later appropriated for resistance, liberation and self-determination); on the creation of autonomous forms of production and the development of alternative networks for the circulation of films; and on the relocation of film away from its historical commercial or institutional setting (cinemas) up to its contemporary migrations into the field of the arts. By making the film society an object of artistic speculation and experimentation, the project aims to reinvent this form and put into practice its potentialities as an assembly; as a situation where people are able to study and think freely; as a joyful celebration.

Jamii ya sinema.club was initiated by Maria Iorio / Raphaël Cuomo with Jackson Bukasa, Melissa Jina, Fils Ngeleka, Bibatanko Tankama and Lucrezia Cippitelli, artistic director of Ateliers Picha et curator of the Biennale de Lubumbashi #7

that relation between us, or among us
a cinema situation*
_Film programme initiated by Maria Iorio / Raphaël Cuomo
_Screening 26 May, 2018, 7pm
_Lottando la vita (Videobase, 1975, 99')
_Introduction and discussion with Annamaria Licciardello
_Archive Kabinett, Berlin, D

That relation between us, or among us follows bodies on the move, their action, retracing displacements and transitions, but also those passages from one place to another constituted by acts of translation. The programme recovers some of those moments recorded by the camera: it examines the process of an "experimental archaeology of the present"; it exposes diachronies, the shifts between different border regimes, the continuities of power and the subjectivities that resist it. The programme reconstructs transnational counter-histories as they emerge from the productions and practices of "minor", decolonial, accented cinemas: they oppose the fiction of an ever-present migration emergency – an "emergency" produced and perpetuated by European policies that make people illegal, by borderisation and spectacularisation mechanisms, and which goes from one "crisis" to the next. What comes to light in the films of this programme, and what is also at stake for the praxis they invented, is a relation. This arises from the action of bodies that appear, speak out, take up the camera, became visible or imperceptible, when they act in concert and invent new forms of alliance, solidarity and commonality. Beyond the chronicles of this action that articulates a principle of equality, what is therefore at stake here is nothing less than freedom – that "relation that can and does happen between us, or indeed among us" – and, ultimately the politics of the possible.

Taking the form of an occasional film society, the screening programme that relation between us, or among us is a section of a multipart project by Maria Iorio / Raphaël Cuomo. It will accompany their exhibition at Archive Kabinett (December 2018 – January 2019) and develop autonomously thereafter.

That relation between us, or among us unfolds in the itinerant series a cinema situation, a long-term project initiated by Maria Iorio / Raphaël Cuomo, which involves research, workshops, lectures, screenings and performances.

Une situation de cinéma. Le cinéma hors les murs

* Displaced outside of the cinema, the films invite us to form a new assembly. The series a cinema situation concentrates not only on the films but also on the potentiality of this assembly and, more widely, on the social practices that have contributed to the creation of new film cultures – film societies, cineclubs, film-makers clubs within decolonial movements, video salons, film workshops, etc. – by establishing other modes of production and distribution, by setting up spaces of freedom, sites for emergent subjectivities. The series would have us question our relation to the films, to their images, complicating it by a "situation", a cinema situation that opens up new aesthetic and political issues and encourages us to imagine new practices and futures for film.

A Discussion on Borders and Migration
with Dimitris Parsanoglou, Maria Iorio, and Raphaël Cuomo
_Screening, discussion
_November 30, 7 pm
_Parko Eleftherias, Athens Municipality Arts Center, Athens, GR

In contemporary discussions of European borders, the sea stands as a silent and invisible yet violent medium that accentuates the tragic or heroic border crossings of migrants and refugees. Although it cannot be grasped, the sea becomes a dynamic environment that responds to the violent assaults of border crossings and surveillance technologies. Two different narratives are conflated during this event in order to explore the different kinds of knowledge of the techno-natural echoes of violence in Mediterranean borderline waters and shores.

Moving Images, Mobile Subjects
_A series of screenings and talks
_13 - 14 May 2016
_Rote Fabrik, Zurich, CH

The images of intercepted boats and anonymous bodies populate the daily press, and have become almost interchangeable from one day to another. They participate in the reproduction of an imaginary of invasion that in turn justifies the deployment by states of exceptional means to combat it. Images and images practices may also be embedded in the very practices of border control […]. However artists and filmmakers have long sought to produce alternative representations of migration, and to intervene directly in the field of the politics of migration through their aesthetic practice. Their image practices and objects may intervene in multiple ways within the field of the politics of migration: from the very presence of their bodies and the relations they establish during the production of images, to the production of images that serve as evidence of migrants’ rights violations. The aesthetic field that is an intrinsic part of the migration regime is thus an embattled terrain, but also an ambivalent one, in which images circulate and are used in different and at times antithetical ways, and thus demand careful positioning by aesthetic practitioners. A series of films and presentations that exemplify modes of intervention in the aesthetic and political field are screened and discussed amongst aesthetic practitioners, theorists and activists. They reflect collectively on the role of aesthetic practices within the currents deadly migration regime and how they can be mobilized to contest it.

What The Tortoise Murmurs To Achilles
On Laziness, Economy of Time, and Productivity
_Group Exhibition
_18 March - 8 May 2016
_Opening March 17th, 6pm

curated by Elena Agudio, Saskia Köbschall & Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung

The exhibition What The Tortoise Murmurs To Achilles. On Laziness, Economy of Time and Productivity is a bid to investigate alternative understandings and perceptions of time from a pluricultural and decolonial perspective by digging into the politics of time and of its negotiations in geopolitical power relations. This project cannot afford the luxury to stand as a simple praise of idleness or a superficial claim on the right to be lazy; rather, the exhibition will be a conceptual and physical space for reflections on chronopolitics and power mechanisms that frame certain rhetorics of time economy. That is to say, the exhibition will take its cue from the assumed and connotated ‘slow’ and ‘disruptive’ rhythm associated with “Southern” attitudes as a position of resistance to the purported industrious nature of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (Max Weber).

Europe. The Future of History
_Collective exhibition
_12 June – 06 September 2015
_Opening 11 June, 7 p.m.
_Kunsthaus Zürich, CH

What image represents Europe? The fall of the Berlin Wall, perhaps, and the unification of Eastern and Western Europe after four decades of division along ideological lines? The reconstruction and the economic miracle following the disaster of the Second World War? Universal human rights and a political consensus among Europeans based on freedom and democracy? Or football championships and the Eurovision Song Contest? Not since Antiquity has a single image stood for Europe, and any that purports to do so can only be a fragment. […] In 1924 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner posed the question: ‘A unified Europe would be the end of wars and it will come, but when?’ This exhibition sets out to chart the various forms in which society’s ongoing desire for a peaceful Europe has been depicted through the history of ideas. It takes in themes such as the delineation and dissolution of frontiers, landscape as a factor in the construction of identity, the development of democracy, labour and mobility.

Logica del passaggio
_Solo exhibition
_6 May – 7 June 2015
_Opening 5 May 2015, 12:00
_Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, IT

Logica del passaggio is curated by Simone Frangi
Part of the installation, the new film Appunti del passaggio features a voice performance by Alessandra Eramo and sound by Gilles Aubry.
A reader including related texts by Simone Frangi and Cynthia Fornage is published by Archive Books, Berlin

In Logica del passaggio, Maria Iorio & Raphaël Cuomo analyse the phenomenon of Italian “economic" migration to Switzerland in the Sixties, which was characterized by immigrant workers being restricted to the sphere of production, by discrimination and xenophobia, and by the use of “health risks” as a strategy to control emigration and the legality of border crossings. Through a film and a spatial installation, Maria Iorio & Raphaël Cuomo reread and write up this chapter of history without ever slipping into a mere documentary, working instead to reveal the replicable structure and logic behind it.
Logica del passaggio thus emphasizes the discrepancy between official, institutional portrayals of the phenomenon of migration and the subjective views of the migrants, trying to construct a ‘history from below’.

Before the Revolution. Notes on Italian Militant Cinema
with Annamaria Licciardello
_Talk, screening, discussion
_Saturday 14 June, 19:00

The outbreak of the student movement in 1968 started a ten-year period of social and political confrontation in Italy that had no equal in the rest of Europe. All sectors of society and all aspects of personal life underwent attempts to change, criticise and revolt. How to represent this multi-faceted movement? How to communicate and disseminate the workers’ struggles, the new forms of organisations, the urgency of revolution? Whose voice should finally be heard? The need for counter information on one hand and for self-representation on the other led to the proliferation of groups and experiences of the, so-called, militant cinema. Even if few traces have remained of it in comparison to the well-known American or French militant cinema, in the late 60s and 70s, it had some (non-commercial) distribution and a place in the theoretical and critical debate. Strongly rooted in that specific historical moment, in the revolutionary momentum and its subsequent failure, Italian militant cinema fell into obscurity in the following decades. These notes try to sketch a reconstruction of this unwritten page of the history of the moving image in Italy.

Self Made Urbanism Rome is an exhibition exploring the Via Casilina, an arterial road in Rome running south-east from the central Porta Maggiore to the city’s borders and beyond. The area fascinated Romantic artists who viewed this urban-rural landscape as complementing the historical and cultural densification with classical temples and inner city palazzi. The artists taking part in the S.M.U.R. project apply contemporary methods to investigate this historical terrain. In this process, they are continuing art history in a new way. In an exchange with scholars and city activists, they explore the self-built and self-organised city expanding here over the last hundred years.

Descriptions de descriptions is the title of a collection of articles written by Pier Paolo Pasolini, which was posthumously published in 1979. It brings together critical prose devoted to films and books, both classics and works by his peers and fellow writers. Under this generic title, we propose to assemble, as exemplified by Pasolini’s location–based films presented in this section, works that stage their own gaze, placing at the very heart of the work the work itself. The works consider colonial history of European nations and its effect on cultural identity and global context of the present day. While Cuomo and Iorio’s Sudeuropa investigates the economies of visibility in relation to past and present mobility regimes over the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, Abonnenc’s An Italian Film is a journey into the turbulent history of copper export from Congo during the European industrialization age.

Alternative spatial imaginaries
_Symposium
_12 April 2013, 13.00-17.00.
_Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, NL

A symposium with artists Sophie Ernst, Anna Okrasko and Maria Iorio & Raphaël Cuomo. Moderated by Anke Bangma.

Much of the current political debate about culture and society revolves around the question who does and who does not belong 'here'. Underlying this debate is a logic that assumes that there is a 'Dutch' space characterized by 'Dutchness', a 'Moroccan' space characterized by 'Moroccanness', etc. The spatial image that thus emerges is that of a discontinuous, ruptured landscape, where cultures are envisioned to occupy their own separate territories. This is the legacy of a 19th century worldview that also has its echoes in the ethnographic museum and its tradition of regional displays.

Migration and mobility have challenged this geography of autonomous cultures located in distinct, often national territories. We need new spatial imaginaries to come to a better understanding of the dynamics of culture, of the multiple lifeworlds that intersect within specific places, and of the ways in which communities take shape and lay claims to space within an interconnected world. Anthropologists, cultural theorists and geographers have therefore increasingly focused on mobility. So too have artists who have developed the visual language to make these issues tangible.

This symposium is therefore as much about topical questions about place and the spatialisation of belonging, as it is about artistic imagination.

This symposium is held in conjunction with the exhibition Imagined Places, with work by Claudia Cristovão, Bouchra Khalili, Adrian Paci, Ho-Yeol Ryu and Zineb Sedira (on view until April 14, 2013).
